This WEF - AUC-NEPAD meeting on mobilising private-sector investment in African agriculture generated high-level commitment to scale-up country level public-private collaboration and attract domestic and foreign investment in support of agricultural development in Africa.
Hosted by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the African Union-NPCA CAADP on 4 May 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa, this meeting was well-attended and agreed on mobilising private-sector investment in African agriculture. A roadmap was adopted through which to establish and support new initiatives in up to 6 priority countries over the next year.
Key themes of discussions included: (i) common goals – food security, agricultural growth, resource management; (ii) centrality of smallholders and women; (iii) skilled farmers are a key input; (iv) public-private collaboration is proving an effective model; (v) establish structures for genuine partnership; (vi) political leadership; (vii) focus initiatives on specific opportunities; (viii) leveraging finance; (ix) the shared ambition for more country-level partnership initiatives.
Over 90 senior figures from governments, multinational corporations, and farmers’ organisations attending this high level meeting agreed on the key role of development partners in advancing partnerships with African institutions and private sector champions.
One of the most concrete outcomes of the meeting was the creation of a small working group meant to support the scaling up of multi-stakeholder initiatives across Africa.
