DFID Research 2009-2010
-
DFID Research 2009–2010 describes projects that DFID currently funds and findings from research that DFID has funded in the past. It demonstrates the impact of DFID funded research, including:
research that can lead to a reduction in poverty. For example, the development and launch of East Coast Fever vaccine in eastern Africa, through the Global Alliance in Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed), could protect farmers’ incomes by saving over a million cattle lives. studies that allow us to do more with available funds. For example, the Developing Antiretroviral Therapy (DART) trial, co-funded with the Medical Research Council (MRC), showed that expensive antiretroviral testing in Africa can be used much less, enabling one third more people with HIV to receive treatment for the same cost. studies that allow us to avoid developing expensive ideas that sound reasonable but do not work. Successes in African Agriculture
-
Agricultural growth offers a potentially powerful tool for spearheading broad-based poverty reduction in Africa. In a continent where 70 percent of the poor work in agriculture, an upsurge in farm productivity contributes directly to broad increases in rural income. In addition, a prosperous agriculture generates powerful growth linkages to the rest of the economy, providing cheap food, raw materials, and a growing demand for nascent processing and service industries. Even the urban poor, who spend the majority of their income on food, see their real incomes rise when growing agricultural productivity and output enable reductions in staple food prices. Consequently, growing agricultural productivity attacks poverty from three different directions. It increases the productivity and incomes of the majority of Africa’s poor, who work primarily in agriculture. It reduces food prices, which govern real incomes and poverty in urban areas, and generates important spill-overs to the rest of the economy.

21st Century Aid: Recognising success and tackling failure - Briefing Paper
-
Aid plays a role in saving millions of lives. Recently, a barrage of criticism has been unleashed on aid, with critics using individual examples of failed aid to argue that all aid is bad and should be reduced or phased out altogether. This is both incorrect and irresponsible. This report examines the evidence, and finds that whilst there is much room for improvement, good quality 21st century aid not only saves lives, but is indispensable in unlocking poor countries’ and people’s ability to work their own way out of poverty.
