Gender and Climate Change: Women Matternew!
-
This paper seeks to draw attention to the gender dimension of climate change and the need to integrate gender issues in climate change responses, with particular emphasis on women’s concerns. The paper is divided into four sections. The first highlights the inevitability of climate change, its impact on the poor and vulnerable, its implications for sustainable development and the need for effective adaptation and mitigation measures. It also underscores how climate change would disproportionately affect women and what needs to be done to ensure that women’s concerns are adequately addressed. The second looks at how climate change would impact key climate sensitive sectors, the gender dimension of the impacts, and proffers recommendations on what should be done to reduce the vulnerability of women to these impacts, and enhance their adaptive capacities. The third provides an overview of financing and capacity building initiatives that could be accessed to fund adaptation and mitigation programmes and projects. The final section makes concluding remarks on the basis of the findings of the preceding sections.

Developing African Agriculture Through Regional Value Chains
The Economic Report on Africa 2009 (ERA 2009) is organized into two parts. Part I examines global economic developments and their implication for Africa (chapter 1), analyses recent economic and social trends (chapter 2) and highlights emerging development challenges to the continent in 2008 (chapter 3). The thematic part of this edition of ERA, Part II, is devoted to the issue of regional value chain development and starts with a discussion in chapter 4 of the need to address challenges to developing African agriculture in the context of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) of the African Union’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AU/NEPAD).

Assessing Progress in Africa toward the Millennium Development – MDG Reportnew!
-
The overall message of this report is that progress toward the MDGs remains on course, albeit unevenly across some goals and subregions. The report testifies to the fact that African countries, with the support of their development partners, are scaling up efforts to accelerate progress to achieve the MDGs. Significant progress has been made on primary school enrolment, gender parity, women’s empowerment, and access to improved sanitation and safe water. Sadly, progress on the health MDGs remains poor. In addition, the incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis is increasing in some subregions of the continent.

Livestock and regional market in the Sahel and West Africa: Potentials and challenges new!
-
The aim of this joint ECOWAS Commission and Sahel and West Africa Club Secretariat (SWAC/OECD) initiative is to examine how livestock rearing could stimulate the West African agricultural and food products market by strengthening food and nutritional security on one hand and by contributing to poverty reduction on the other. This analysis is a contribution to the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP) adopted on 19 January 2005, notably concerning the specific objectives to: (i) reduce the region’s dependency on imports by giving priority to local food production and its processing as well as capitalising on comparative advantages and complementarities between zones; (ii) to promote fair trade and the economic integration of farms in international, regional and national markets, and (iii) create employment by guaranteeing revenue pre- and post¬production.
