Agriculture as a Motor of Pro-poor Growth, 5th International BTC seminar, 16-17 December 2009
-
"AGRICULTURE AS A MOTOR OF PRO-POOR GROWTH". The 16-17 December 2009 seminar intends to focus on poverty reduction through agriculture in development countries. It wants to look at the issue in a holistic way taking into account both the needs and the actors, and scrutinise the potential of development partners to contribute to pro-poor agriculture development. The seminar will set out to bridge the gap between administrators and professionals of different backgrounds, and to use both practical experience and theoretical models as a basis for discussion.

UN High Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis: Progress Report, April 2008-October 2009
-
The spike in food prices during 2008 underscored in the most elemental way what experts have been telling us for many years: the world's food systems are in crisis. They are dysfunctional, and are failing too many people and many of our most vulnerable nations. Moreover, the situation is deteriorating at an ever increasing rate as a result of a worldwide contraction of market economies and the growing impact of climate change. For the first time, more than one billion people are hungry.
At the end of April 2008 the United Nations’ Chief Executives Board established a UN System High Level Task Force (HLTF) as a temporary measure to enhance the efforts of the UN system and International Financial Institutions in response to the Global Food Security Crisis. The mandate of the HLTF was to ensure a coherent system-wide response to both the causes of this crisis and its overwhelming adverse consequences among the world’s most vulnerable populations. The UN Secretary-General serves as Task Force Chair with the FAO Director General as Vice-Chair.
This report outlines progress made by the High Level Task Force over the course of 18 months, ending in October 2009.

Rapid Assessment of Aid Flows for Agricultural Development in Sub-Saharan Africa:Investment Centre Division Discussion Paper, September 2009
-
This discussion paper provides an initial assessment of the flow of aid to agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa. This assessment is based on data on Official Development Assistance (ODA) collected from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) databases (as it was available in April 2009), major bilateral and multilateral financing agencies, as well as two private foundations active in the agriculture sector. Trends in ODA show a long term declines agricultural ODA in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in relation to social sectors. In recent years, however, ODA to the agriculture sector has increased and there is more financing for the agriculture than usually assumed if aid flows from private foundations are included. Findings from the data also highlight the need for balancing short term food security interventions with long productivity investments, a focus on aid harmonization due to numerous donors in the sector, and the potential problem of absorptive capacity due to low disbursement rates for aid recipients.

Highlights from MillionsFed: Proven Successes in Agricultural Development, November 2009
-
Learning from successes in agricultural development is now more urgent than ever. Progress in feeding the world’s billions has slowed while the challenge of meeting future food needs remains enormous and is subject to new uncertainties in the global food and agricultural systems.
To examine past successes in agricultural development and draw out the lessons they offer, IFPRI gathered, assessed and documented evidence on what works in agricultural development -- what policies, programs, and investments have actually reduced hunger and poverty. The “Millions Fed: Proven Successes in Agricultural Development” project identifies about 20 successes across the developing world, spanning from interventions enhancing productivity to combating diseases and pests, conserving natural resources, expanding market opportunities, improving human nutrition, and improving the policy environment. A common thread running through many of these successes is the confluence of science, policy, and leadership.
