The Second European Rural Forum will bring together all the European Development Agencies and their partners working to promote sustainable growth and to reduce rural poverty in developing countries. This will be held in Berlin in 2007, and will be the second event (following Montpellier 2002).
The central question to be addressed by the forum will be “Sustainable Growth and Poverty Reduction in Rural Africa: How can Europe be a more effective partner?”
The forum will take place in Berlin, during the week of 18 June 2007, and will bring together around 400 participants. The forum will meet two sets of objectives: (i) experience sharing between EU agencies and development partners in recipient countries to support staff development, share best practice, build networks and thereby facilitate aid coordination, and (ii) to engage in high level policy advocacy to raise the profile of rural development issues, and to inform the wider policy debate on achieving the Millennium Development Goals in Africa.
The forum will be divided into two parts addressing each of the two objectives.
- Part one lasting three days will be a professional forum primarily for staff of EU development agencies and development partners in recipient countries, as well as invited resource people from developing countries, international organisations, NGOs and research organisations.
- Part two lasting one day will be a high level session for senior policy makers, parliamentarians, civil society, the private sector and the press.
The forum will focus specifically on rural development in Sub-Saharan Africa, but will also include lessons and examples from other regions, including the focus countries under the EC/FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme.
