DAC/POVNET workshop on: China’s experience at home and in Africa on reducing poverty and promoting pro-poor growth.

The workshop will take place at the OECD Headquarters, Paris

Subject

Scaling up for effective pro-poor growth outcomes is a major component of the POVNET work programme for 2007-08 and POVNET has agreed that taking its work further forward will require greater engagement with others, including major non-DAC donors such as China. This workshop will contribute to this objective and provide an opportunity to learn about China’s policies towards poverty reduction at home and in Africa.

The Vice Director of China’s State Council Leading Group Office for Poverty Alleviation and Development, the Vice Director of the International Poverty Reduction Research Centre, China (IPRCC) and the Dean of the College of Humanities and Development, China Agricultural University, Beijing, have agreed to participate in the workshop. Other international speakers and panelists will be invited as well.

The proposed topics to be covered by the workshop are:

  • China’s rural poverty reduction and pro-poor growth strategies; how did China develop these strategies, what combination of efforts were most effective, what are the current challenges and how is China tackling these?
  • How is China’s development co-operation with African countries benefiting from its own positive experience in poverty reduction; what lessons from China’s own policies and experience can be transferred to Africa?
  • How can POVNET members cooperate with China to make poverty reduction in Africa more effective? In what areas is the POVNET's policy guidance on pro-poor growth commensurate with China’s development policies in Africa?
