Platform Support for the Implementation of CAADP
The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) is the most ambitious and comprehensive agricultural reform effort ever undertaken in Africa. It addresses policy and capacity issues across the entire agricultural sector and across the entire African continent and is a valuable mechanism to reduce hunger and poverty. To learn more about CAADP, please refer to the box at right.
Supporting CAADP has become a major focus of Platform activities. Our purpose is to facilitate enhanced donor coordination and alignment to African countries’ strategies with respect to CAADP in order to improve overall aid effectiveness.
This initiative of the Platform is based upon a Commission for Africa (CfA) recommendation and the G8 Gleneagles commitment in 2005 and was reaffirmed in the Africa Update Report agreed at the G8 meeting in St Petersburg. The Progress Report on African Agriculture, published at the 7th African Partnership Forum (APF) Meeting, October 2006 in Moscow, constituted a “wake-up call” as the report assessed the overall score on CAADP progress as “red”.
In response, the Platform, together with its member-organisation USAID, convened the first Donor Consultation Workshop on strengthening coordinated donor support for CAADP in Geneva on November 15, 2006. The meeting clarified the role of, and identified activities to be taken forward by, the Platform to help its members support CAADP more effectively. For further information on our CAADP-related activities, please refer to the synthesis report of our General Meeting in Washington, in December 2006.
