“Are we strategically well positioned and organised so that our activities contribute to i) reaching greater and ii) more effective investments in ARD?” This was the central question at the Steering Committee retreat in Poggiovalle, Italy. From 26-28 September the Steering Committee and the Focal Points from IFAD and SDC together with the Secretariat staff met with the objective to reflect on the progress made during the last years and to discuss the future focus of the growing initiative.
In an interactive brainstorming the participants identified the main challenges and opportunities since the last Retreat in Wakefield, 2005. It was prominently mentioned that the Platform should seize the opportunity of rising investments in agriculture, seek actively new partnerships and position the Platform at the interface between technical to political system. One of the challenges identified was the involvement of the non-SC Focal Points more actively in the activities and discussions of the Platform.
After the kick of exercise the participants took the three fields of activities of the Platform under the loop discussing on the future of the in-country facilitations, of how to improve knowledge sharing and identified target groups for the outreach and advocacy activities.
Another large block was devoted to the discussions on the Platform governance issues. The Task Force on ‘Charter Review’ presented the proposed changes regarding the Platform membership, rotation of SC/Chairs, and role of Secretariat. After some hot discussions, the current SC took decision that all institutions which contribute an amount of at least 50.000 Euro per year in cash to the Platform will become official voting members and sit on the newly created ‘Board’ of the Platform. The Board members will decide on budget, annual work plan and changes in the charter. The Board members will select 2 Co-Chairs and SC which will consist of 6 members and will supervise the Secretariat.
