The Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) in the World Bank, together with FAO and IFAD, is currently developing a Gender in Agricultural Livelihoods (GAL) Sourcebook. This will provide a wide range of practical guidelines and innovative approaches to investing in the agriculture sector in a way that integrates gender dimension for improved livelihoods and development impacts.

As has been well documented in the literature, ignoring gender disparities comes at great cost – to people’s well-being and to countries’ abilities to grow sustainably and thereby reduce poverty. While significant progress has been made in integrating gender in agriculture, research findings at the country level reveal that attention to gender is not yet mainstreamed.

An important and often-cited reason for inadequately addressing gender issues is the lack of tools and know-how to integrate gender perspectives in agricultural interventions, particularly in the face of rapid changes in the agriculture sector itself. The GAL Sourcebook addresses this gap and aims to provide guidance to development practitioners in integrating gender analysis and pro-poor approaches. The GAL Sourcebook team is casting the net wide to learn what works. It includes 17 modules covering key themes in agriculture from land to governance and from conflict to food security. Content will have a global reach and be assembled from partner agencies, donors, civil society groups, and other organizations.

Percieving the Donor Platform an important mechanism in catalyzing and harmonizing donor practices, the Sourcebook team asks the Platform members to share their experiences particularly in institutionalizing gender and how it had translated into actual activities and outcomes in our client countries. We are particularly interesting in learning about how gender had been integrated into client government’s agricultural policies and good governance.

You would make a considerable contribution to the development of the Sourcebook if you could provide short responses to these questions of the short doc.pngquestionnaire. The team is not looking for a comprehensive list but your best experiences that they can highlight as innovations and/or key lessons in the Sourcebook, particularly in the Policy and Governance Module. Moreover, any relevant document or material you would like to share to with the Sourcebook team will be very useful. We would appreciate if you could provide your responses or any documentation by December 03, 2007 to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
