Question 1

In the period since the creation of the Platform, there has been growing recognition of the crucial role that agriculture plays in reducing poverty (MDG 1) and in being an engine of growth, especially in the large number of agriculture-based economies. This sea change of views culminated in the WDR 2008. There has also been a high food price crisis that has suddenly drawn attention to the fact that there has been under-investment in agriculture for decades. A number of initiatives have emerged since then to analyse the current situation and provide advice for further political action. The Platform has played a part in this process through, for example, representing bilateral donors in the MDG Working Group and in preparing for the discussion of ARD at the High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra.

1. What role, if any, can the Platform play in high level fora and initiatives such as the UN Secretary General’s High Level Task Force on the Global Food Crisis and its Comprehensive Framework for Action (CFA), the UN Secretary General’s MDG Task Force for Africa, and the HLF on Aid Effectiveness (Accra)?
