REED

Objectives of the framework for Rural Economic and Enterprise Development

REED offers a framework defined by ten cornerstones for joint planning and evaluation at local and regional level. It aims at including all major aspects of economic development, this means the relevant stakeholders together prioritise all measures and define responsibilities. We expect that the use of the REED framework will increase the efficiency and transparency of rural economic development and help to improve co-operation between private enterprises, service organisations, public institutions and donors within the sector.

Its objectives are:

  • To raise the profile of pro-poor growth in rural poverty reduction programmes as lined out in Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP) and in current donor strategies.
  • To promote rural economic development by including the non-farming economy.
  • To overcome isolated approaches in Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) development, micro-finance, agricultural services and infrastructure investment.
