The Platform policy brief on gender and agriculture was interesting and provided insights concerning different strategic positions of Platform members as well as common concerns and directions.

Austrian Development Agency

//  A vital role

Women play a vital role as agricultural producers and as agents of food and nutritional security. Yet relative to men, they have less access to productive assets such as land or services such as finance and extension. Their chances to participate in collective action as members of agricultural cooperatives or water user associations remain critically low. In both centralised and decentralised governance systems, women tend to lack a political voice.

Gender inequalities are a root cause of lower food production, lesser income and higher levels of poverty and food insecurity. Agriculture in low-income developing countries is a sector with exceptionally high impact in terms of its potential to reduce poverty. Yet for agricultural growth to fulfil this potential, gender disparities must be addressed and effectively reduced.

This thematic group wishes to raise the profile of gender and youth equity in agriculture. It aims to participate in important events such as GCARD2 for strengthening gender and youth-specific concerns in ARD.
