Managing climate extremes and disasters

Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) has launched a three part series of reports "Managing Climate Extremes and Disasters: Lessons from the IPCC SREX Report" covering each of the Asian, African and Latin American and Caribbean regions. CDKN is a network sponsored by the UKaid from the Department for International Development and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

//  Findings of the IPCC special report

The reports highlight the scientific findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) for each region, and discuss the implications for society. CDKN's three 'Lessons from SREX' reports aim to make the findings more accessible for policy-makers, media, business and other stakeholders at a regional level.

//  Dealing with extreme weather and climate events

The SREX report itself contributes to dealing with extreme weather and climate events as an issue in decision-making under uncertainty, analysing response in the context of risk management. The report consists of nine chapters, covering risk management; observed and projected changes in extreme weather and climate events; exposure and vulnerability to as well as losses resulting from such events; adaptation options from the local to the international scale; the role of sustainable development in modulating risks; and insights from specific case studies.

//  Media outreach events

CDKN is collaborating with the IPCC, the Overseas Development Institute, Norway's Climate and Pollution Agency and Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organise a series of outreach events in Asia, Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean in April-June 2012, which will give policy-makers, media, civil society and business representatives the chance to discuss the SREX findings in person.
