Virtual briefings

Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) lacks defining conceptual boundaries. This makes it difficult for donors to effectively monitor and evaluate AR4D within its Innovation Systems context. Guidelines for improved and standardised reporting of AR4D to the Creditor Reporting System (CRS) is a one short term step towards harmonising the reporting of AR4D. The issues around developing these guidelines and some key areas where donors could engage to improve their relevance are outlined in this Virtual Briefing.

After the presentation by Sinead Mowlds, consultant at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Phil Dobie, Senior Fellow at the World Agroforestry Centre and Adjunct Professor at University College Cork, Ireland, the participants discuss the practical implications of the shift in paradigms for researchers and donors’ behaviour.

The virtual briefing is chaired by Nikita Eriksen-Hamel (CIDA).

Research

rachel-lambert-alan-dangour smallThe newly invigorated fight against malnutrition is marked by poorly researched areas - this is a main finding of the recently published DFID report "Current and Planned Research on Agriculture for Improved Nutrition: A Mapping and a Gap Analysis". It suggests methods for tackling these gaps and lays out several steps towards establishing more complete research pathways.

After briefly presenting the study, Rachel Lambert and Alan Dangour of DFID answered questions by the online participants. The discussion centred on different conceptual frameworks for analysis, on other studies on the topic and issues surrounding evidence-based research on agriculture.

noriPastoral livelihoods have a long tradition in many world regions but today face growing pressures due to environmental and social changes. From his long working experience in pastoralism Michele Nori, consultant for rural development and pastoral livelihoods, looked into the challenges and the opportunities pastoralists are facing today from a global perspective. He also indicated opportunities to best support them because pastoralism remains the most effective way to utilise drylands, according to his experience.

nabarroAt Rio+20, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon presented his vision of a world free of hunger - the Zero Hunger Challenge. Following up on his timely briefing of Platform members in July, David Nabarro provided an update on the Challenge towards a world in which every person has his or her right to food and adequate nutrition guaranteed. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Food and Nutrition discussed potentials for practical alignment with the vision's five pillars before turning to a discussion on the topic.

María Larrea Loriente, Platform Focal Point for Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, led the discussion.

The Global Agenda of Action in Support of Sustainable Livestock Sector Development focuses on how the sector can accommodate demand growth for livestock products within a context of growing resource scarcity. It aims to catalyze concrete multi-stakeholder action to achieve sustainable improvement in resource-use efficiency whilst ensuring the sector's contribution to food security and livelihoods. The Agenda's stakeholder have agreed three initial thematic focus areas:

  1. Closing the efficiency gap: Existing technology and institutional frameworks can generate large resource use efficiency, economic and social gains
  2. Grassland: Payment for environmental services can connect people and production systems, raise productivity and enhance livelihoods
  3. Manure: Recovery of nutrients and energy contained can reduce nutrient overload and greenhouse gas emissions

Jeroen Dijkman, Senior Officer (Livestock Sector Policy) - Livestock Information, Sector Analysis and Policy Branch, FAO briefly introduced online participants to the Global Agenda of Action before turning to a discussion on the topic.
