Multilateralism and Multi-sector Policy Engagement

Agrifood systems increasingly intersect with, employment and economic growth, trade and value chains, migration and fragility, climate adaptation, and security and geopolitical stability.

At the same time, multilateral cooperation is becoming more fragmented and transactional. While forums such as the G7, G20, and UN processes remain important, bilateral and regional agreements are gaining prominence.

Donors must ensure agrifood systems are positioned effectively across these evolving policy spaces.

This workstream is championed by Max Von Bonsdorff, Chief Partnership Officer, Global Engagement, Partnership and Resource Mobilization, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Multilateralism and Multi-sector Policy Engagement

Agrifood systems increasingly intersect with, employment and economic growth, trade and value chains, migration and fragility, climate adaptation, and security and geopolitical stability.

While evidence on impact exists, it is often fragmented, technical, and not framed in ways that support cabinet-level budget decisions or parliamentary scrutiny.

The Platform will support members in these strategic focus areas:

  • Linking agrifood systems to employment, trade, migration and security agendas

  • Navigating trade-related dimensions, including:

    • Market access
    • Value-chain integration
    • Sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards
    • Trade policy–food security interactions
  • Coordinated engagement in key global policy processes

  • Responding to emerging bilateral and regional dynamics

Workstream objectives:

  • Provide policy-oriented dialogue space for members

  • Develop cross-sectoral framing tools

  • Facilitate alignment ahead of major global moments

  • Strengthen collective positioning of agrifood systems as global public goods

Deliverables and results:

  • Agrifood systems are consistently embedded in wider economic, security and climate policy debates — and donors engage more strategically and cohesively across multilateral and bilateral arenas.
