FASA published its first major research report, providing an up-to-date panorama of 175 Agri-SME funds across the continent, offering novel insights and sizing the immense opportunity for funders to drive impact.

Financing for Agri-SMEs in Africa (FASA) published its first learning report, “The Landscape of agri-SME Funds in Africa”, analyzing 175 agri-SME funds across Africa to offer new insights and impactful opportunities for funders.

This report provides a comprehensive panorama of the African Agri-SME fund landscape, by assessing funds at various stages of their cycle. This mapping highlights the rise of a new generation of funds reshaping agricultural investment. The share of funds managed by Africa-based teams is growing, targeting the “Missing Middle” by deploying smaller, specialized capital directly to the businesses.

Despite these promising trends, funding gaps remain, signalling a need for targeted cooperation and strategic capital deployment.

This report emphasizes the decisive role of donors and catalytic funders in improving African Agri-SMEs’ boundaries, effectiveness, and status. Donor intervention is particularly recommended in utilizing market to work better: mitigating the potential high-risk realms, shortening the gaps for new fund managers to sustainably invest, meeting the standards, and deepening impacts between the relationships.
