The report introduces 15 opportunity crops—lesser-known but important crops—and stresses the need for greater investment in research, seed systems, processing infrastructure, and public awareness to expand their use and unlock their potential in more diverse and resilient food systems.

Food plays a critical role in the functioning of society, and every individual and organization is inextricably linked to the global food system. The COVID-19 pandemic further reinforced the importance of food security and resilient food supply chains. However, food systems are now at a critical juncture, facing escalating challenges such as environmental degradation, geopolitical tensions, and energy shortages.

In this report, Reimagining Global Food System Resilience, KPMG highlights the need for collaboration that extends beyond traditional food sector actors, calling for action from organizations not historically involved in food systems. To establish more resilient food systems, the report identifies ten key levers for change, including increased capital flows, technological innovation, and stronger cross-sector collaboration. Notably, the report underscores that capital allocation ultimately shapes food system outcomes, influencing which innovations scale, which practices are adopted, and how resilience is built across the sector.
